In an effort to regain some time and focus on my life in 2016, I've decided its time to pull the plug for a while on social media. I deactivated my online dating accounts in late December (which I have had an on/off again relationship with much of 2015). After some further consideration, I deactivated my Facebook account Jan 3rd. FB has a lot of amazing capabilities, allowing us to stay real-time close with long distance friends and an easy mechanism for coordinating events.
The downside for me is the built-up feeling of having to feed and sustain my FB account. When I realized I was actually deciding what events to do or why I needed to take a picture (so I could post to FB) I recognized FB had taken over my life and my attention in ways I did not want. I also recognized I had been using FB to keep track of people that I knew in my heart I needed to let go. I guess my mom isn't the only FB stalker? :o)
I've been FB-less for a week and after having been contacted by several friends asking if I'd died (or unfriended them), I reactivated my account to post that I'm on FB hiatus. My goal is to keep FB app off my phone for at least the month of January. I'm a week in and it has been challenging. I had no idea how "connected" FB made me feel to the world. Which tells me I need to do a better job of relationship building in real life. Here's to a see-you-old-school-in-person 2016.
Guess this just means we need to have lunch soon?
